Off the back of winning the recent Novare South African Terrior Wine Awards, Writers Block has now been named a top Pinotage today at the ABSA Top 10 Pinotage Competition.
The Absa Top 10 Pinotage trophy is one of the most sought-after accolades for cellarmasters, winery proprietors and wine brand marketers in South Africa. A record number of 161 entries were received by the competition organisers. Neil Ellis (proprietor of Neil Ellis Wines) chaired the team of experienced palates who deliberated at the judging venue of Nederburg in Paarl, with the other panellists including wine educator Nomonde Kubheka, wine maker Francois Haasbrook, wine writer Samarie Smith and Francois Rautenbach, wine buyer for Singita Premier Wine Direct. This is Flagstone Writers Block 4th ABSA Top 10 Pinotage trophy in a row and 6th award overall in the competition.
Gerhard Swart’s mastery of Pinotage continues to draw the praise of critics, judges and Flagstone fans, one suspects the 2016 vintage is just getting warmed up.
"Pinotage is a demanding grape, almost volatile in temperament. The superstition in the winery is that Pinotage can smell fear on a winemaker so if you’re serious about producing premium Pinotage that’s going to be life changing for the drinker you need a deep well of dedication and bold vision. My mantra is to remain true to the wine.” Comments winemaker Gerhard Swart.
His mantra is achieved through his meticulous attention to detail coupled with a conversant understanding of Pinotage applied in the vineyard and continuing through the cellar. It’s this understanding of the grape that allows him to craft some of the most delicious, complex wines imaginable.
