STRATA SERIES | Ruby in the Dust
Ruby Cabernet, 2002
Ruby Cabernet is a viticultural crossing of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignan. It is often grown in overly fertile soils and forced to carry to flavourless finality an unenviable load of grapes through scorching summers and dry winds. When treated with even a small amount of respect and love, however, Ruby Cab responds by giving us densely flavoured, intensely coloured wines. And, if you can find a place to grow this variety where the vine is in balance with its environment and with its crop, you have the opportunity to make a wine with the sort of tannin you can jump into, wrap warmly around yourself and fall asleep in. And the ensuing dreams are inevitably full of hope.
Perhaps that is why this variety can do so well in South Africa. For this is a place still ravaged by insensitivity and reeling from imbalance. But it is a place where even a little amount of respect and love can move mountains and where hope is a defining national characteristic
