FREE RUN RESERVE SAUVIGNON BLANC
At Flagstone we aim to make wine that respects our 350-year-old winemaking heritage, while always celebrating the magnificence of nature. We want to make gorgeous wines that stimulate your brain as much as they please your taste
buds.
This wine displays all the classical cues of a cool climate, high altitude Sauvignon Blanc. Grown in dryland soils, 310m above sea level, just a few kilometres from the cold Atlantic Ocean.
The grapes for this wine are hand-picked, bunch-sorted and gently destemmed, then left on the skins for 18 hours at below 5 °C. The Free Run juice is then drained and slowly settled by gravity over 48 hours. The juice is fermented at a low temperature to retain all the essential aromatics and kept on lees for 6 months after fermentation to extract maximum aroma and mouthfeel. BUY NOW

PARADIGM CHENIN BLANC
At Flagstone we aim to make wine that respects our 350 year old winemaking heritage, while always celebrating the magnificence of nature. We want to make gorgeous wines that stimulate your brain as much as they please your taste buds.
Like a story, this wine has a beginning and an end. Born from a single idea, it encourages to push the conventional understanding of how a wine should taste. The name itself, urges the drinker to shift any preconceived assumptions and challenge any concept or notion of what it should be. This wine is crafted from old bush vines planted in 1979 & is also proudly vegan.
We use zero animal products in its production; electing plant-derived proteins instead. Interestingly, it maintains its status without compromising character and because of this, it’s enhanced by the vegan-friendly process. BUY NOW

TREATY TREE SAUVIGNON BLANC SEMILLON
This wine is named after Cape Town’s ancient Treaty Tree still standing in Woodstock. In 1509 this wind-sculptured Milkwood witnessed the massacre by local Khoi San of 64 of d’Almeidas infamous, battle-hardened Portuguese marines, who had foolishly abducted a Khoi San baby and attempted to take the infant back to their ships waiting in Table Bay. Then in 1806 a Peace Treaty was signed beneath its boughs after the British forces defeated the Batavian Republic at the Battle of Blaauwberg.
The Flagstone “Treaty Tree Sauvignon Blanc & Semillon” Reserve is crafted passionately with food in mind – We want the wine to make the food look good and add to the enjoyment of the whole dining experience. We have blended the wine to be at once layered and complex, but very drinkable. BUY NOW

Wine style
Sweet | 1 2 3 4 5 | Dry
Light | 1 2 3 4 5 | Full bodied
Colour
Intriguing, light lime green hue shot through with white gold.
Bouquet
On the nose the wine jumps out of the glass with focused aromas of asparagus, fresh thyme, gooseberry and sweet melon. In the background, a hint of white pepper and nutmeg.
Palate
The wine seduces your palate with a texture of creamed honey, but the flavours are taut citrus fruit framed by a suggestion of toasty oak. An extraordinarily complex and satisfying mouthful.
Food
The wine pairs amazingly well with shellfish and fish. Steamed mussels in a tomato sauce, crayfish cooked in the shell on the braai, with an olive oil and garlic basting, or even Snoek cooked on the braai, the traditional way with marmalade all go brilliantly. But that’s all sort of expected, I suppose. It’s when the wine can also stand up to a steak sandwich that you really realise the power and structure in this wine.

Another cool thing about this blend is the age-ability of the wine. While the Sauvignon Blanc gives the lifted notes and the ethereal aromas, the Semillon helps the wine keep fresh for many years. This wine can easily be enjoyed 10 years from vintage.

WORD OF MOUTH VIOGNIER
Word of mouth is one of the most effective ways to spread news and share a discovery, and it’s how we would like Flagstone’s Viognier to become more widely known. A wine of such exciting substance that you can’t help but tell your friends about it.
Conveying this message through word of mouth carries its own ironic twist in that this white wine grape is somewhat of an articulatory challenge and its pronunciation often leaves people tongue tied. At first glance one’s not quite sure if this word should roll, bounce or pop off the tongue, so by naming our Viognier, “Word of Mouth” we make it that much easier to order off a menu. BUY NOW

TRIBUTARY CHENIN BLANC
Imagine starting at the sea, where a big river runs into the surf. You explore upstream looking for the source, the reason. A carefully crafted wine is a bit like a river. It is born of many influences, many tributaries.
This wine honours that philosophy because a balanced, delicious wine is always the result of many convergent energies; the weather, geography and the winemaker being just one of them. It is how they come together that counts. BUY NOW

TWO ROADS CHARDONNAY
The name Two Roads refers to the Robert Frost poem whose lines appear on the label. This is our winemaking mantra. We question everything with respect and always take the road less travelled.
The grapes for this wine were picked in February for optimum ripeness. After gentle pressing, the juice was fermented and matured for six months in a combination of French and American oak barrels. Bottled under screwcap to ensure freshness and longevity, this wine can be enjoyed now or carefully cellared for up to five years from vintage. BUY NOW

FREE RUN SAUVIGNON BLANC
While Sauvignon Blanc can be grown virtually everywhere, there are very few places that can produce a Sauvignon Blanc of stunning quality. This illusive essence is largely determined by where the vines are planted, the soil type, slope, aspect and the meso-climate that influences the vineyard.
The Free Run is a unique Sauvignon Blanc with grapes made from these special places. The creation of a top class Sauvignon Blanc is a very technical process and requires very precise and careful handling all through the undertaking to produce a balanced, crisp white wine with an ethereal aroma and those sought after long, lingering, yummy flavours.
This wine is proudly vegan. We use zero animal products in its production; electing plant-derived proteins instead. Interestingly,it maintains its status without compromising character and because of this, it’s enhanced by the vegan-friendly process. BUY NOW

POETRY CHARDONNAY
Poetry is about paired-down words, making, forming, creating. It is art, the essence of language, meaning a fundamental creative act using language. Accomplished poetry is a distillation of language so that meaning shines through. Powerful poetry is utter, it pulls no punches and is not concerned with excuses. It celebrates the joy and highlights the natural sadness of our human condition, poetry eulogises the cycle of nature. Poetry is romantic, poignant and it shows the compulsion of our heart, the engine of our ambition and the spirit of desire.
We don’t expect our simple offerings to do all of this of course, but we hope our authentic work and insistence on integrity carries a message of hope and love long after the last delicious sip. BUY NOW

NOON GUN DRY WHITE
The Noon Gun canon stands on Signal Hill above the town centre in Cape Town, known in South Africa as The Mother City. Its daily firing is South Africa’s oldest official tradition. You can always tell who the new tourists in town are, because the big bang at noon sends them scrambling under sidewalk restaurant tables. To Cape Town residents, the daily boom signals lunchtime. Originally, the daily white plume of smoke from the barrel of the Noon Gun was used by ship’s captains at anchor in Table Bay as a way of keeping accurate time on board. By so doing they were able to determine Longitude accurately at sea.
We put an extraordinary amount of care into crafting this quirky blend – which for the past 12 vintages has won numerous awards and a legion of fans around the world for its balance and zesty concentration. BUY NOW

Perfect on its own (a good Jacuzzi wine!), but also excellent with fresh summer salads, roasted free range chicken, or even fish dishes with creamy sauce. Ultimately, it’s the versatility of the wine that makes Noon Gun the ultimate everyday lunchtime wine.

TIME MANNER PLACE RESERVE PINOTAGE
Crafted more by obsessive selections of selections, than with fancy equipment, this wine is really the distilled vision of what one tiny corner of the universe tastes of.
Firstly we had a philosophical selection to make – what variety of grape to craft this rare & individual wine from. It was an easy enough choice for us. We believe we’ve found an exceptional single vineyard block high in the Waaihoek Mountains (700m above sea level), above the sweeping Breedekloof valley.
The final selection process takes place while the wine matures in small 225L barrels at a constant, cool temperature. We taste each barrel many times a year, carefully & deliberately deciding which of the barrels will be good enough to go into this exclusive, hand-crafted wine. BUY NOW

MUSIC ROOM CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Elsie Fraser-Munn, Flagstone’s Founder, Bruce Jack’s grandmother, was a legendary music teacher and performer. In her Music Room, practice made perfect. Patience, dedication and attention to detail are similarly required to craft great Cabernet. The music on the front label is a beautiful choral piece composed for Bruce’s grandmother by the renowned South African composer, Peter Klatzow. Every year we court disaster with the weather, leaving the grapes to hang long past when it is safe for grapes to be out and about. We just pray each day the next hot, dry, north wind isn’t going to blast it flat and shrivel the berries beyond recognition. The resultant aromas and flavours of these heroic vineyards are expressed more as complex, ethereal summer fruits like blueberry, cassis and black-ripe youngberry. This density of red berry flavours is framed by herbs like basil and fresh thyme. BUY NOW

DRAGON TREE CAPE BLEND
The wine takes its name from a Dragon Tree (Genus: Dracaena) given to the Port Captain of Cape Town, by a passing ship’s captain over 100 years ago, which grows above what used to be our barrel maturation cellar in the Waterfront. Our winery moved to Somerset west in 2002.
The Flagstone Dragon Tree Cape Blend is our underground, revolution wine. This is the one wine in our range that we can confidently describe as a cult wine. It has been so more or less since its first release in 2000. It’s the wine the winemaking team buys more of than any other. Enough said.
What makes Dragon Tree such a successful, cult wine is the tannin structure. We earmark specific vineyards for Dragon Tree. They all have one thing in common – lots of stone and rock in the soil. We believe this contributes to a very specific tannin feel. BUY NOW

FIONA - PINOT NOIR
Pinot Noir is called The Heartbreak Grape by winemakers because it is such a moody grape variety to grow and a very difficult wine to make. You can work so hard at it and when it doesn’t work well, it will break your heart. But when you do make a beautiful example, you immediately forget all about all the hard times and small disappointments. You fall straight back in love. It is a wine that has that sort of hold over you. Truly great Pinot Noir can be astonishing because it is both sensually balanced and elegant. This wine is named after the sister of Flagstone’s Founder, Bruce Jack, who was the inspiration to make Pinot Noir in this style from cool-climate fruit. BUY NOW

TRUTH TREE PINOTAGE
The Truth Tree is the translation of the common name in isiXhosa for an Erythrina or Coral Tree. These are indigenous to the Eastern Cape, although they are part of the pea family and related species are distributed worldwide in tropical and sub-tropical areas. Distinctive bright red flowers appear in winter and the tree is quite breathtakingly beautiful.
It is said that the Xhosa believe that if you tell a lie in the shade of a Truth Tree, terrible things will befall you. As a result, important village council meetings, especially around critical issues and disputes, etc. would always be held in the shade of the Truth Tree.
This wine is proudly vegan. We use zero animal products in its production; electing plant-derived proteins instead. Interestingly, it maintains its status without compromising character and because of this, it’s enhanced by the vegan friendly process.BUY NOW

Food
Pinotage is an incredible wine, because it is versatile enough to pair across a huge spectrum of dishes from oysters to game to spicy Middle Eastern cuisine. In fact, like Dragon Tree, it loves spices and even chillies. It is gorgeous with slow-cooked duck drizzled with a pomegranate and cardamom gravy and served with potatoes roasted in duck dripping as well as a green salad of bitter leaves.

TREATY TREE CAB SAUV / PETIT VERDOT / MALBEC / MERLOT
This wine is named after Cape Town’s ancient Treaty Tree still standing in Woodstock. In 1509 this wind-sculptured Milkwood witnessed the massacre by local Khoi San of 64 of d’Almeidas infamous, battle-hardened Portuguese marines, who had foolishly abducted a Khoi San baby and attempted to take the infant back to their ships waiting in Table Bay. Then in 1806 a Peace Treaty was signed beneath its boughs after the British forces defeated the Batavian Republic at the Battle of Blaauwberg.
This wine is crafted passionately with food in mind – We want the wine to make the food look good and add to the enjoyment of the whole dining experience. We have blended the wine to be at once layered and complex, but very drinkable. BUY NOW

LONGITUDE DRY RED
In order to set one’s chronometer at port, ship captains kept a beady eye on a harbour’s time ball. The building depicted on the front of the label is the Time Ball Tower which still stands in the Cape Town Harbour. A time ball on top of the tower drops at a predetermined time (in Cape Town it was 1 o’clock in the afternoon) to enable sailors to set or check their marine chronometers from the ships. This enabled them to keep their timepieces super accurate and so calculate longitude while at sea. Longitude is Flagstone’s way-finder wine, a place where people enter the quirky world of Flagstone.
The secret to crafting our Longitude is painstaking blending, using the three varieties we think do consistently brilliantly in our environment – Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Malbec. We want to accentuate a unique South African combination of accessibility and complex diversity. Longitude must taste juicy and fruity. It must feel soft, but have intriguing, lingering tannins and flavour.
Most importantly it must always offer unbeatable value for money. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives structure and presence, the Shiraz adds a spicy, velvety mouth-feel and Malbec is there for an extra dollop of juicy, ripe red fruit flavour. BUY NOW
